Removing formulas from Excel is the process of replacing each formula with its current result. The result becomes a fixed number, date, text value, or error and will no longer recalculate when the source cells change.

Remove All Formulas From One Excel Worksheet

  1. Make a backup of the workbook.
  2. Open the worksheet that contains the formulas.
  3. Select the worksheet:
    • Click the triangle in the top-left corner between column A and row 1, or
    • Press Ctrl+A.
  4. Press Ctrl+C.
  5. Select Home > Paste > Values.
  6. Save the workbook.

A formula such as =A1+B1 is replaced with its current result, such as 250. The cell will keep 250 even if the source cells change.

If you only want to convert part of the worksheet, select that range instead of the whole worksheet.

Remove Formulas While Keeping Formatting

Use Paste Values, not regular Paste. Paste Values replaces the formulas with their results while leaving the existing worksheet formatting in place. This preserves the layout, fonts, colours and borders already applied to the cells.

Remove Formulas From the Entire Workbook

Excel does not have one standard command that converts formulas on every worksheet at once. Repeat the conversion on each worksheet:

  1. Select a worksheet tab.
  2. Select the used range or the whole worksheet.
  3. Copy the selection.
  4. Choose Home > Paste > Values.
  5. Repeat these steps for the remaining worksheets.

Check formulas that refer to other worksheets before converting them. Once converted, their displayed results are fixed and will not update when the source worksheet changes.

Delete Formulas and Their Results

To make the selected cells blank:

  1. Select the cells or worksheet.
  2. Press Delete.

This removes both the formulas and their calculated results. Use this method only when you do not need to keep the displayed numbers or text.

Check the Workbook Before Saving

  • Save a copy before replacing formulas with values. The change is permanent unless you immediately use Undo.
  • Check formulas using TODAY(), NOW(), live data connections or external links. Their current results will be frozen.
  • Look for errors such as #REF!, #VALUE! and #N/A before converting the formulas.
  • If the worksheet contains an array formula, select the complete array range before choosing Paste Values.
